The Town

After WW1, Baroness Noémie de Rothschild was a frequent visitor to St Moritz, but did not get on with the German aristocracy. So much so that she decided to establish a ski resort in France and bought a huge area of land in Megève. Together with her husband, Maurice de Rothschild, she built the Mont d’Arbois in 1921, a luxury hotel equipped with an ice rink. More chalets followed and she went on to create the first cable car in 1933, an airfield and an 18-hole golf course.

With approximately 3’043 inhabitants,  Megève is one of the most beautiful ski resorts in Europe and is the playground of the rich and famous.

In a stunning location, surrounded by mountains, forests or farms, the area features rustic-chic chalets, upmarket hotels and designer boutiques but also a very family atmosphere. A stay at Megève is a real breath of fresh air amid the greenery and the important architectural heritage of the city with its typical chalets of the region, its alpine farms, or the great mountain churches.

Activities

Megève is a paradise of skiing with over 445 kilometers of slopes for all levels and a variety of activities, and a mecca of luxury Fashion. Ski runs are a mixture of wide open slopes and beautiful tree lined trails. Every slope or trail is suitable for all abilities and for the advanced skiers  the steepness of Mont Joly and the World Cup Downhill run on Cote 2000 will not disappoint.

Although Megève offers some good off-piste skiing, the right ski lift pass can give advanced skiers access to nearby resorts such as Les Contamines and Chamonix, for more challenging adventures.

The après ski is fantastic: the low key bars, more glamorous night clubs and the popular Jazz Club offer something for everyone. For those wanting a more relaxing day, it also boasts some of the best spas in France.

It is ompossible to get bored in Megève as activities and sites to discover are numerous in the region. In the Summer the resort offers numerous outdoor adventures, including beautiful hiking trails, horse riding, mountain biking, water sports on the picturesque Lac de Javen, golf and fun activities for children including a summer toboggan track and zip line.

Despite its glitzy reputation, Megève’s charm is that it remains very much a Haute-Savoie village, complete with working farms, local cafés and children enjoying themselves in playgrounds and on the ice rink. It offers a very authentic, rustic and entirely unique experience.
